So, what do we do you ask? Check us out!!
Atlantic Aviators was founded in 2003 by a group of aviators and aviation enthusiasts. Over the years, we have held a variety of different events at our local airport in order to introduce and educate the public on the world of aviation. We mentor local girl scout troops and assist scouts to get their aviation badges. On the second Saturday in May each year we hold an Airport Fun Day, at New Bedford Regional Airport(KEWB).
Through our Aviation and STEM Scholarship, we encourage students to persue higher education. Our largest undertaking to date has been to construct an aviation themed playground at New Bedford Regional Airport. You can see our membership table at many aviation events around the area.

NASA Astronaut Jessica U. Meir
On Tuesday October 20, the Atlantic Aviators hosted NASA Astronaut Jessica Meir for their Atlantic Aviators Sudent Motivational Event. Jessica implored southcoast students of Dartmouth Middle School, Our Sisters' School, and New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School to “find your passion and make it happen".
Jessica is one of 8 people selected to be a member of the 2013 Astronaut Class (NASA Astronaut Group 21). The 2013 astronaut candidate class comes from one of the largest number of applications NASA ever received -- more than 6,100. Group 21 received a wide range of technical training at space centers around the globe to prepare for missions to low-Earth orbit, an asteroid and eventually – Mars!
Meir recalled the excitement she felt when she learned she had been selected for astronaut training.
“My childhood dream, when I was 5 years old, came true when the phone rang in 2013 and they asked me if I wanted to come work at NASA,” she said. “I was really in shock.”
She noted that she had previously applied in 2009 but had been rejected, teaching her a lesson in perseverance.
“I did what I had been working toward my entire life and that time I didn’t get it,” she said. “But you know, what do you have to do if you fail? You gotta keep trying.”
EAA Young Eagles Event
On Saturday May 16, the Atlantic Aviators, along with the local chapter of EAA and the New Bedford Regional Airport, hosted an EAA Young Eagles ® event. This completely free event allowed over 120 local children a chance to get up in the air for a free flight. Thank you to eveyrone who volunteered their time, aircraft or came out to participate in this event!
Girl Scout Mentoring
Each year our group works with local Girl Scout troops helping them earn their Aerospace badges! We put together some activities for the troop to participate in as well as providing them with information about flying. After our activities we give them a tour of an aircraft hangar and have them check out the inside of an airplane. We bring them to the New Bedford Regional Airport's observation deck (weather permitting) to better show and explain more about taking off, landing and taxi-ing an aircraft. Below is a slideshow of last year's scouting event.
