Community Outreach

The Atlantic Aviators are dedicate to making their community a better place, which is why we designed, funded through generous donations and installed this public playground at the New Bedford Regional Airport.

Aviation Themed Playground Build Update – January 2014

After the “Community Build Day” held on 09/28/2013. the surfacing of poured in place rubber and x-grass was then installed. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony officially opening the playground was held on Saturday, November 2, 2013.

The $165,000 we raised combined with the $10,000 saved by the community build, made it possible for us to meet our goal of $175,000. It may not be the biggest, but we have what we think is the best and most unique playground you will find.

On December 11, 2013, the playground was renamed the LCpl Matthew R Rodriguez Memorial Playground. Matthew was a local marine killed in action in Afghanistan. In the Spring we will be adding a fence across the front of the playground as well as benches on the sides so parents will be able to sit and watch the children play. A sign dedicating the playground and acknowledging donors will also be added.

Aviation Themed Playground Build Update - October 2013

On Saturday 9/28 over 50 volunteers arrived bright and early at the New Bedford Regional Airport prepped and ready to go to build the Aviation Themed Playground. In what seemed like no time at all, packages were opened and the equipment spread out. Small groups worked diligently on putting together each panel, step, platform and slide. The dirt area slowly transformed into the Aviation Themed Playground.

Next steps include the installation of a crushed stone base that will be the foundation for the poured in place surfacing that will really transform the playground into an aviation themed play space. Two additional play pieces will be installed as well.

The playground will be closed until all pieces are in place. The Ribbon Cutting is scheduled for Saturday, November 2nd at 10am.

Aviation Themed Playground Progress Report – Summer 2013

The light is at the end of the tunnel! We have nearly reached our full fund raising goal for the playground! Equipment orders and customization of pieces has been completed over the summer. The playground build date is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, 2013. This will be a community build and we are seeking volunteers! Email AtlanticAviators@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering.

The build will be at the New Bedford Regional Airport and will begin with registration at 7:00AM. All volunteers are asked to be on site no later than 7:30AM. We will be assembling and erecting pieces of playground equipment. We also need volunteers to help with registration, first aid and refreshments. The day will happen RAIN or SHINE and will run until mid- to late-afternoon; or whenever we are finished!

A special thanks goes out to all the contributors who are making this day possible!

Playground Fundraiser at the Airport Grille - Winter 2011

On December 4th the chapter hosted a Playground Fundraiser at the Airport Grille. It was a great afternoon where attendees could come together and socialize all while raising funds for the Playground. With displays throughout the restaurant on the playground layout, there was much talk about how much we have raised, what our goals are and our overall progress to date. A 50/50 raffle was held as well as 2 lucky people winning great door prizes. Events like this help not just the Atlantic Aviators, but everyone who supports the Playground closer to reaching the goal and seeing the dream come true. To date we have raised over $80,000 from private contributions and are actively seeking grants.

Aviation-Themed Playground Progress Report - Fall 2011

This playground will provide a hands-on learning experience to children of all ages and abilities. It will be a unique opportunity to capture their imaginations, while serving as an introduction to the world of aviation. Inspiring children to pursue an education in aviation or a related science, technology, engineering or math field is our ultimate goal. Children must be exposed to such things in order to develop an interest.

We estimate the cost of the completed playground will be $175,000. To date, we have raised over $72,000 from private contributions and are actively seeking grants. In August we were given an exciting opportunity: The Whiting-Truscott Challenge. All new donations made by September 30, 2011 would be matched dollar for dollar, up to $10,000, by these very special donors. We met that challenge and now need your assistance to achieve our ultimate goal.

Please check back soon for more information about upcoming fundraising events. If you would like to donate to this project or learn how you can get involved, please email the chapter at AtlanticAviators@yahoo.com.

Aviation Themed Playground Announcement - Summer 2011

On July 26th, the Atlantic Aviators proudly announced the future home of the Aviation Themed Playground for the New Bedford Regional Airport(KEWB). The playground will be located in the grassy area Southwest of the control tower at New Bedford Regional Airport (KEWB), in front of “spectator parking”. All components of the custom designed playground are aviation related. The play surface of the area which measures at 90’ by 30’ will be a poured in place rubber composite material, used to minimize debris on airport movement areas, and maximize handicap accessibility.

The equipment has been designed for children aged 2-12 years old. The play area’s design maximizes the play value for all children, both handicapped and able bodied, with several ground level activity panels and a Sway FunŽ Glider. The Sway FunŽ is a wheelchair accessible glider with benches large enough to seat 9 people, with additional space for 2 wheelchairs. Playground Fundraiser at the Airport Grille

New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang stopped by to show his support for the group’s efforts.

On Sunday, November 14th from 1-4PM, the Atlantic Aviators hosted an afternoon at the Airport Grille to benefit the Aviation-Themed Playground Building Fund. Over 150 tickets to the event were sold. Airplane rides were offered to all guests in attendance, provided by Cape Air. Guests were taken up in Cessna 402s and brought for a scenic view of New Bedford and the surrounding area.

New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang stopped by to show his support for the group’s efforts. Also in attendance were several members of the New Bedford Regional Airport Commission. Live music entertained guests in “the hangar”, and was provided by Bill Santos. A piece of luggage from the playground’s luggage climber was sold at the event. Door prizes were given to two lucky guests. All in all the event was a great success in order to kick off fundraising for the playground.
